Online teaching in international higher education
Primary tabs
This teacher training course provides an advanced introduction to online teaching in international higher education. The course is intended for experienced teachers with a PhD or equivalent and a minimum of three years of teaching experience in higher education. Therefore, the course will not spend time on general aspects of teaching in higher education, but focus instead on the specifics of teaching online and the opportunities this offers for international relations and outreach.
The course covers all main aspects of online teaching in international environments. It starts by analysing how to set up your studio, where you will learn about internet connections, cameras, lighting, capture cards, microphones, monitors, computers, desk management, and all things related to hardware you will need to know in order to excel in online teaching. The second part of the course deals with managing students, and discusses all the software that can help you manage your relation with them, from video conferencing and online learning platforms to content management systems you can use to build your own website. It also introduces gamification and its role in online teaching and learning. The third part of the course will introduce you to the opportunities that online teaching offers in international higher education, from international collaboration to international students and international sources of funding. The final part of the course will introduce you to livestreaming and how to use social networks to promote your teaching beyond your class.
By the end of the course, you should be able to deliver your first lecture online to your students, discuss with them by video conference, invite a guest lecturer, livestream your lecture on Youtube or Facebook, assess student progress, and measure student satisfaction by using online methods.
